Recognizing Early Symptoms of Dengue Fever: What You Should Know

Dengue fever is one of the most common mosquito-borne illnesses in tropical regions, including Indonesia. Because its early symptoms often resemble the flu, many people mistake dengue for a minor infection—causing delays in treatment. Early recognition is essential to prevent complications such as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

Here’s what you need to know to identify the early signs and take action quickly.

What Is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictusmosquito. These mosquitoes are active mostly in the morning and late afternoon, making awareness even more important.

There is no specific medication to directly cure dengue, so early detection and supportive medical care are key to recovery.

1. High Fever Appearing Suddenly

One of the most common early symptoms is a sudden high fever, usually reaching 39°C–40°C.
The fever typically lasts 2–7 days. Many patients feel chills and extreme tiredness during this stage.

If the fever doesn’t decrease with medication or returns after disappearing, medical attention is strongly recommended.

2. Severe Headache and Pain Behind the Eyes

A strong, persistent headache—often accompanied by pain behind the eyes—is another classic sign of dengue. This symptom is not commonly found in regular flu, making it a key indicator to watch.

3. Muscle, Joint, and Bone Pain

Dengue is sometimes called “breakbone fever” due to the intense pain it can cause. Patients may experience:

  • Muscle soreness
  • Joint stiffness
  • Bone pain
  • Body aches

These pains may worsen with movement and are often more severe than typical viral infections.

4. Nausea, Vomiting, and Appetite Loss

Early dengue infection can affect the digestive system. Many patients report:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Occasional vomiting

These symptoms, combined with fever, can lead to dehydration—making adequate fluid intake very important.

5. Skin Rashes or Red Spots

Around the 3rd to 5th day of fever, some individuals develop:

  • Reddish rashes
  • Small red spots (petechiae) that do not fade when pressed

These spots are caused by small bleeding under the skin and are a warning sign that platelet levels may be decreasing.

6. Fatigue and Weakness

Even in the early phase, dengue can cause significant fatigue. Patients often feel unusually tired, weak, or unable to perform daily activities.

If fatigue worsens after the fever drops, it might indicate entry into the critical phase, which requires medical supervision.

7. Early Warning Signs of Severe Dengue (Seek Medical Help Immediately)

Some symptoms signal progression to a dangerous stage. Seek urgent medical care if you notice:

  • Persistent vomiting
  • Severe stomach or abdominal pain
  • Bleeding gums or nosebleeds
  • Blood in urine or stool
  • Rapid breathing
  • Extreme fatigue or restlessness

These signs may indicate internal bleeding or organ involvement.

How Dengue Is Diagnosed

A medical professional can confirm dengue through:

  • Blood tests to measure platelet levels
  • NS1 antigen test
  • PCR or IgM/IgG antibody tests

Early testing helps determine the right treatment strategy and reduces complication risks.

What to Do If You Suspect Dengue

If you or someone in your home shows early symptoms:

  1. Visit a medical clinic immediately for evaluation
  2. Stay hydrated—water, ORS, soup, coconut water
  3. Avoid painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin, as they increase bleeding risk
  4. Monitor temperature and symptoms closely

Early consultation can prevent the condition from worsening.

Prevention Tips

Protect yourself and your family by practicing preventive steps:

  • Use mosquito repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants, especially outdoors
  • Keep your home clean and remove stagnant water
  • Install window and door screens
  • Use mosquito nets if necessary

Prevention is always more effective than treatment.
